Ayuda para las multas disponible en español

AUSTIN, Texas — Ayuda Para Las Multas ahora está disponible en español. El recurso digital, creado por las organizaciones defensoras y legales Texas Appleseed y Texas Fair Defense Project, ofrece información para los individuos que no pueden pagar las multas u otros costos que son partes de multas por infracciones, como ofensas de tránsito. Una beca de la Fundación Estatal de Abogados de Texas (Texas Bar Foundation) apoyó la traducción de este recurso al español. 

La caja de herramientas, ahora disponible en https://tickethelptexas.org/espanol/, incluye varios temas para los individuos que no tienen su propio abogado para defenderlos en el caso de un delito menor de Clase C. La caja de herramientas incluye los siguientes temas:

• Consejos para comparecer ante el juez
• Como demostrar que no puede pagar su multa
• Qué hacer con una multa vieja que todavía no puede pagar
• Qué hacer si no puede regresar al lugar donde recibió la infracción 
• Información sobre las penas alternativas, tal como el trabajo comunitario
• Como resolver las retenciones de OmniBase, que impiden que las personas renueven sus licencias de conducir

“Puede ser muy difícil navegar el proceso de una infracción, aún sin la barrera del idioma,” dice Jennifer Carreon, directora del proyecto de justicia penal de Texas Appleseed. “Con Ayuda para las Multas en español, esperamos bajar estas barreras, y ayudar a los hispanohablantes tras el estado de Texas resolver sus citaciones para que puedan continuar con sus vidas, y conducir en las calles de Texas roads sin tener miedo de las consecuencias,” dice Carreon.

En los casos de multas por infracciones, como ofensas de tránsito y otras ofensas de delitos menor de Clase C, no se le designará un abogado para que lo represente.

“Muchas personas no comparecen ante el juez porque no entienden los pasos que pueden tomar si no pueden pagar sus infracciones,” dice Karly Jo Dixon, abogada de Texas Fair Defense Project. “Esperamos que la caja de herramientas ofrezca los recursos para evitar una orden de arresto y para evitar ser arrestado por estas ofensas, y esperamos que dé a más comunidades el acceso a las herramientas para defenderse,” dice Dixon.

El sitio también incluye una lista de organizaciones legales que podrían ofrecer ayuda legal, formularios útiles, y un glosario para explicar varios términos. Los documentos incluyen plantillos de solicitudes para el trabajo comunitario, para un plan de pago, y para reducir las multas.

Ticket Help Texas Resource Launches in Spanish
Toolkit offers information on courts, alternative sentences, and more for Texans struggling to pay tickets

AUSTIN, Texas — Ticket Help Texas is now available in Spanish. The online resource, created by advocacy and legal organizations Texas Appleseed and the Texas Fair Defense Project, provides information for Texans who are unable to pay fines and other costs as part of fine-only offenses, such as traffic tickets. A grant from the Texas Bar Foundation supported the toolkit translation. 

The toolkit, available at www.TicketHelpTexas.org/espanol, covers a range of topics for people who often do not have their own legal representation in Class C misdemeanor cases. Some of the topics in the toolkit include the following:

• Advice for appearing in court
• How to show an inability to pay fines
• What to do about old tickets you still cannot pay
• What to do if you can’t travel back to where you received a ticket
• Information about alternative sentences, such as community service
• How to clear OmniBase holds, which prevent people from renewing their driver’s license 

“Navigating the ticket process can be challenging enough without having to worry about language barriers,” said Jennifer Carreon, Director of the Criminal Justice project at Texas Appleseed. “With Ticket Help Texas in Spanish, we hope to alleviate those barriers, and help Spanish speakers across Texas manage their citations so that they carry on with their lives, and drive on Texas roads without fear of repercussions,” said Carreon.

In fine-only misdemeanor cases, such as for traffic tickets and other Class C misdemeanor offenses, no legal counsel is appointed to represent people. 

“Many individuals do not appear in court because they don’t understand the steps they need to take if they cannot afford to pay their tickets,” said Karly Jo Dixon, Managing Attorney at the Texas Fair Defense Project. “We hope this toolkit provides the resources for individuals to avoid warrants and arrest for these offenses, while giving more communities access to the tools to advocate for themselves,” said Dixon.

The site also features a list of legal organizations that may be able to provide legal help, forms people may need, and a glossary to explain various terms. Sample documents include templates to request community service, payment plans and fine reductions.
