El Paso has more than 70,000 active holds on driver's licenses

WHAT: Texas Appleseed’s Driver’s License Restoration Clinic will offer legal assistance to El Paso residents whose driver’s licenses are restricted due to their inability to pay outstanding parking or traffic citations. The clinic will also include an educational component to inform residents on El Paso’s use of the Failure to Appear/Pay program, Texas Appleseed’s efforts to repeal it, and how residents can advocate to local policymakers.

WHO: Texas Appleseed is connecting El Paso residents who have restricted licenses to local pro bono attorneys who have volunteered to help write documents necessary for clients to resolve outstanding tickets.

WHEN: Saturday, October 12, 2024, from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. MT. Lunch and daycare will be provided.

WHERE: Center for Civic Empowerment: 304 Texas Ave., El Paso, TX 79901 (17th floor)

REGISTER: People who are interested in receiving assistance can register for the clinic here. Assistance will be available in English and Spanish.

WHY: Even minor infractions like parking tickets can cost hundreds of dollars, and if drivers can’t afford to pay them, a hold is placed on the renewal of their driver’s license. With no means to pay and minimal transportation alternatives, these drivers often must continue driving without a valid license, risking additional tickets and arrest warrants, all of which trap working-class El Pasoans in a vicious cycle of debt.
