Texas Appleseed is part of the Clean Slate Texas coalition of community and advocacy organizations, business and faith leaders, directly impacted people and families who are dedicated to expanding access to criminal record sealing. Our goal is to ensure that people with justice involvement can get housing, employment, education and more without facing a lifetime of discrimination.
Texas law provides for the sealing of a person’s criminal arrest records under certain circumstances through a process called nondisclosure. However, this process is costly and complex, rendering record clearing services inaccessible even to those who qualify. Clean Slate Texas includes a package of legislative bills that would provide some record sealing relief automatically and expand eligibility, making record clearing more accessible.
We believe that people deserve second chances, especially from discrimination derived from involvement with a system rife with racial and economic disparities and overpolicing.
